In the last season of "Agents of SHIELD," International Business Times said Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) had himself arrested by Agent May (played by Ming-Na Wen). Ward's arrest has left him orphaned, away from the direction of The Clairvoyant. Fans of the show are left wondering what life is for the double agent after being freed from Agent Garett (by Bill Paxton), who had continually given him orders since he was in his teens. There have been many speculations circulating online, one of which MStarz said is about Ward's new role in the series.
Show executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen told TV Guide that Season 2 will be taking Ward into a journey of self-discovery. She said, ""He spent his whole life being a follower and being told what to do. Now he's in our custody and alone, so what does that mean for him? Season 2 is Ward continuing to discover what he wants."
Does this mean turning into the show's version of "The Punisher"? Nerdist said that Ward clearly fits the bill, given the fact that he is a disillusioned military veteran who knows how to kill people in brutal fashion. In the Marvel comics world, he is Frank Castle, who has been driven with revenge to seek out those who have murdered his family.
Executive producer Jeph Loeb set rumors swirling about Ward's transformation to become a primetime television version of Frank Castle during "SHIELD"'s panel discussion at the recent Comic-Con in San Diego, Nerdist said. Although Dalton only hinted that his character's return would be "special" in Season 2, Loeb went further and threw it out there that Ward could become the gun-wielding vigilante.
Despite the comments, Dalton said in another interview with Seat42F that his character wouldn't be the black-and-white character comic book fans come to know of Castle, should the rumors are true. But he did say that Ward would be seen more as an anti-hero in the show rather as a villain who has associations with the feared terrorist group Hydra.
I'm definitely in Season 2, and we're taking it one step at a time. And it seems that the fans are really enjoying this turn, and so I hope that being something that they want to see explored as much as I do."
Season 2 of "Agents of SHIELD" will return on September 23 on ABC at 9PM.
