'Amazing Spider-Man 3' gives way to 'Sinister Six' spin-off; Norman Osborne to return as mutated Green Goblin?

Although it wasn't rated as high as previous installments by critics, fans showed their support for the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler at the box office where the film garnered $91 million on the opening weekend. Many fans are already excited what Sony Pictures has in store for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but they'll have to wait a few more years since Sony just announced they are doing a spin-off movie based on one of Spider-Man's most iconic super villain team: the Sinister Six. The film, which is self-titled for now, is expected to premiere on November 11, 2016, while Sony moved "The Amazing Spider-Man 3"'s launch date to 2018.

In the comic books, the "Sinister Six" started out as a group of super villains who has one goal, and that is to get rid of Spider-Man. The members of this super villain group, although they opted out to fight against Spider-Man individually, were Vulture, Kraven the Hunter, Electro, Sandman, and Mysterio. In the "Amazing Spider-Man 2," however, it is most likely that Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Green Goblin will be part of the team.

Since the introduction of the various gadgets in the fallen Norman Osborne's (Chris Cooper) lab and the appearance of Rhino in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," most fans and critics were very skeptical if Sony could pull-off a sequel to a superhero movie with not just three, but six villains. The move to make a spin-off movie dedicated to the Sinister Six says a lot about how Sony is adamant in building their own cinematic universe just like what Marvel Studios is doing.

Meanwhile, Screencrush presented a fan theory of what Sony has planned in the "Sinister Six" film. In the Blu-Ray teaser for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," it was revealed during a clip with director Marc Webber that there might be a possibility that the elder Osborne would be reincarnated in time for "Sinister Six" by his son Harry (Dane DeHaan). Just behind Webber was a wall full of concept art for the members of Sinister Six, and among them was a drawing of the preserved head of Norman, who was thought to have died at the beginning of the movie.

Although there are no details released yet about the "Sinister Six"'s storyline aside from the fact that they would all kill Spider-Man, Sony's investment expanding its own universe would be an interesting thing to follow in cinemas.
