The hit zombie-apocalyptic game "The Last of Us" developed by Naughty Dog is reportedly hitting the big screens soon. This seems to be a no-brainer, considering the awards and the commercial successes the video game has received since its debut.
The first hint of the game to be turned into a movie was Sony's online brand protection agency MarkMonitor securing the domain names TheLastOfUs-Movie.com and TheLastOfUsMovie.net on November 25 last year, IGN said. As such, rumors about the potential actors who would be portraying the game characters Joel and Ellie have been buzzing on the Internet, more so when executive director Sam Raimi has been reportedly tapped to direct "The Last of Us" movie adaptation, given that he helmed the horror flick "Evil Dead."
According to International Business Times, "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams (who plays Arya Stark) has a huge chance of landing the role of Ellie thanks to her gritty delivery of her character in the George RR Martin novels-based fantasy television series. The site said game creator and film writer Neil Drunkman revealed during the recent Comic-Con that Raimi was "in talks with the actor". Several names including Chloe Grace Moretz ("Cloud of Sils Maria," Kick-Ass") and Ellen Page ("Juno, "Inception") were considered to play Ellie.
As for the actors who would be playing Joel, "Wolverine" star Hugh Jackman is one of them, although Bruce Campbell of "Army of Darkness" and original "Evil Dead" fame is favored to play the role.
"The Last of Us," which was first released on June 2013 and set in United States, received countless of praises for its characterization, graphics, story arc, and horrifying yet realistic setting. The game features main characters Joel and Ellie, who would need to find a way to stop the plague, which has caused people to turn into zombies, while staying alive. Into their quest, Ellie and Joel are seeking for medicine (due to the fact that Ellie was infected) and Joel is in the midst of dying after he was severely wounded when they were attacked by bandits.
Drunkman was quoted by KPopStarz about their efforts to produce a film treatment to the game. "It's an adaptation of the story of "The Last of Us."As far as where we go and how we make it fit into a film, how it takes into account the unique properties of film... We're not sure yet. We're only just scratching the surface."
