“Guardians of the Galaxy” Takes No. 1 Spot Again with $17.6 M Haul, Director James Gunn Open for an “Avengers” Crossover for Sequel

By

"Guardians of the Galaxy" came out on top again this weekend after it reclaims the number one spot with its $17.6 million haul, Variety.com reports. With its second time in the number one spot with two weeks separating its victories, the rock n' roll sci-fi film is now named the first ever movie this year that lorded over the domestic box office in non-consecutive weeks.

The movie, moreover, is now the top-grossing domestic release in the summer after racking up $489.5 million globally. The Marvel production seems to have struck gold again this week after the apparent weakness of the new movie releases such as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" which came out in second place ($16.8 million) and young adult book adaptation "If I Stay" in third place ($16.4 million).

All these are great achievements for "Guardians of the Galaxy" which has already been confirmed to have a sequel released on July 28, 2017. And of course, together with the massive success the movie enjoys comes tons of speculations from fans as well when it comes to plot. Among these, one of the most bizarre is that a Planet Hulk will serve as the main premise of the sequel, something that Director James Gunn immediately shot down.

"There's not going to be a Planet Hulk movie, there was never going to be a Planet Hulk movie, there was never a plan for the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy-I wouldn't want the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy!" Ecumenicalnews.com quotes Gunn.

While he may be so against this, however, he showed his openness for the possibility of an "Avengers" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" crossover. In an interview with KCRW, he said: "You know, there's probably at some point in time where the Avengers, some members of the Avengers and maybe some members of the Guardians will perhaps meet."

He also talked about considering all sorts of possibilities of a crossover. With two series having big characters under the same universe, he said that these personalities "are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other."

However, IBTimes says that Gunn's main focus remains to be the "mythology of the Guardians and the cosmic mythology of Marvel Cosmic end of things." In the end, his main aim centers on where the Guardians will be going and what the future holds for them.
