Multiple reports have announced earlier that Samsung Galaxy Note 2 users can now update their OS to Android Kitkat 4.4.4. The official OmniROM nightlies have been rolled out for the international Galaxy Note 2 variants with model number GT-N7100, according to the International Business Times.
Citing a piece by GSM Arena, Kpopstarz noted that the latest and official specs list for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is Android Kitkat 4.4.2. However, with the use of ROM that was developed by custom Android developers, Note 2 owners can now update their smartphones to Google's latest mobile OS Android Kitkat 4.4.4. On the other hand, IB Times had warned that installing the custom firmware may cause damage to the device especially when the user is not careful with following the detailed steps of the installation procedure. Moreover, the site has earlier reported that there are certain conditions that must be met for the update to be done smoothly.
There are two important things to do prior to the OS update. To ensure that the update goes smoothly, Galaxy Note 2 users need to go through the following process:
Pre-installation process
1) Install USB Drivers for Galaxy Note 2 to transfer files between the Android device and the computer.
2) You should install the USB drivers first to enable file transfer between your computer and Note 2.
3) You have to select the Debugging mode to successfully connect your phone to your computer. Go to Settings> Developer Options> then tick off USB Debugging
4) You should make sure that you have backed your data up by using ClockworkMod or TWRP utilities.
5) You should also make sure that your phone has at least 80% battery power so as not to interrupt the process. Update interruption due to battery loss might cause serious damage to your phone.
6) You have to check if your phone is rooted and running the latest CWM or TWRP custom recovery.
7) You must verify the model number of your Note 2 N7100 because Omni ROM nightly only works with this model. To check, go to Settings> About phone> Model number.
8) You need to perform the wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache a number of times if it gets stuck in booting animation, then reboot the device. You may need to wait for 10 minutes after reboot for best results.
After meeting the initial requirements, users can now proceed to the installation process.
Installation process
To correctly install the Android 4.4.4 on Galaxy Note (2 GT-N7100) using OmniROM, follow the steps below.
1) First, you have to connect your phone to the computer and transfer the downloaded file. Don't unzip it yet.
2) You will now turn off your phone after unplugging it from the computer.
3) You must enter recovery mode by pressing and holding Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together. You may use either of the recoveries to install the CM11.0 M9 build.
4) You must now create a Nandroid backup of the current ROM in case the new one fails.
5) CWM: Select backup and restore, name the file, and confirm the process.
6) TWRP: Press Backup, name the file, then swipe to confirm the process.
7) You will now do the factory reset, which will delete data from system partition. It will not delete contents of internal and external storage.
8) CWM: Select wipe data/factory reset and confirm the process,
9) TWRP: Press Wipe and swipe to confirm,
10) Note: Do not skip this process as the new ROM might not boot into normal mode.
11) Now, it's time for you to install OmniRom to Note 2
12) CWM: Select install zip from sdcard then choose zip from sdcard. Now browse to the location where ROM is saved. Select it and confirm installation.
13) TWRP: Press Install, find the ROM file and swipe to confirm installation.
14) You will follow the same procedure to flash Gapps file after ROM is installed.
15) Then you will return to the custom recovery screen and reboot the phone into normal mode after the process is completed.
The Note 2 should now be updated with the customized OmniROM featuring Android 4.4.4.
