Cricket Wireless now offers a budget smartphone for just under $100 (after a $50 mail-in rebate, that is) - the ZTE Grand X. The release is part of their summer promotion to offer lower prices. Cricket is the first US wireless carrier to offer the handset to the American market.
While the ZTE Grand X is far from the anticipated flagship releases this fall, it's not too shabby for a phone that gets the job done. Its target market is the casual user, people who need phones that may not necessarily be packed with powerful features, but will still get the job done.
ZTE Grand X Features
The ZTE Grand X is an entry-level phone that is meant to "do the job," that is, to make calls, send SMS messages, and go online every now and then. It definitely is not a gamer's kind of device, nor is it a powerful media device, but it should entertain casual users just fine according to Android Authority. The 5-inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass offers a rather large display for casual users while resisting wear and tear well. The resolution isn't so bad for a phone in its category, offering screen resolution of 960 x 540 pixels.
GSM Arena lists other features including a 1.2 GHz dual-core QualComm Snapdragon MSM8210 processor, a 5 MP main camera with a 1 MP front-facing camera, 4 GB of internal memory with 1 GB RAM, 4G LTE connection, and TruMedia surround sound. Users can expect a hefty battery life, with the device carrying a 2300 mAh battery.
Cricket Wireless' Summer Promotion
The ZTE Grand X is only one of the handsets being offered in Cricket Wireless' summer promotion, wehre they offer rebates on several Android and Windows Phone devices or offer them for lower prices with no contract according to Android Central. Cricket Wireless is withholding other information about the device's specs - after all, their target market is the casual user who wouldn't care much about the other specs - but given its current price and specs, it is a budget phone worth checking out.
