"Covert Affairs'"s summer finale has finally given the much-awaited answers to questions surrounding the Chicago bombing. But aside from revealing who were behind the incident, the episode also provided viewers with a number of shocking twists and turns regarding the central characters of the show that the episode ended with a lot more questions left to be answered, according to Spoiler TV.
Ahead of the series' return to the fall, it has been shown on the mid-season finale that the bombing incident in Chicago was just a tip of the iceberg, MovieNewsGuide.com said. Fans are expecting that the remaining six episodes of the series will unveil what this bigger story is.
In an interview with TVLine , "Covert Affairs'" showrunners Matt Corman and Chris Ord teased about the diplomat's role in the series. Corman said that the show's return will pick up from where the summer finale ended and added, "More or less, yeah. Shawn Doyle's character, Belenko, talks about Istanbul, and the action picks up there right away, basically."
Referring to Caitlin's (Perrey Reeves) death and McQuaid (Nicholas Bishop) landing in the hospital, Ord said, "There's certainly a power of vacuum. Whether there's a struggle is another question. Arthur's (Peter Gallagher) the most senior executive left standing at the company. Despite having been the DPS (Director of Clandestine Services at the CIA), he's not super Machiavellian like Henry Wilcox (Gregory Itzin) was. But with the same respect, he'll find himself assuming a role that he didn't expect to assume when he came on."
TVGuide said Annie's (Piper Perabo) interest in tracking down Belenko will grow after the latter was seen talking over the phone saying about how he missed the real target and that he wishes to head to Istanbul soon to finish his business. Whatever Belenko's business is and whether Annie managed to thwart Belenko's plans remain to be seen once the show returns.
The other half of "Covert Affairs" Season 5 will start airing sometime this fall.
