Earlier this month, it was rumored that the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets were looking to make a big run at the Phoenix Suns dynamic backcourt duo of Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic next year in the 2016 NBA free agency. If Bledsoe signs the qualifying offer, he is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer together with Dragic which means that the Suns risk losing both their budding stars next year when they hit the free agency market
The Lakers and Rockets need not bother courting Dragic next year though because the Slovenian guard has just publicly expressed his intention to resign with the Suns when he becomes a free agent according to a report by David King of Bright Side of the Sun:
"Got a very interesting position with the club. Guess I'll break the contract and sign a new one," Dragic said. "As I spoke [to the Suns], I immediately during the first week, when the market opens, sign and I will therefore be calm."
Dragic's statement simply means that he plans to opt out of his contract and quickly re-sign next summer possibly for a higher deal than his $7.5 million/year contract. Of course, team's can still throw in their offers to Dragic the moment he decides to opt out with the final year of his contract but King still thinks that he is going nowhere next summer:
Goran has never been one to court drama, and he's always wanted to be in Phoenix. He considers Phoenix his NBA home. Two years ago, he re-signed with the Suns for slightly less money than (reportedly) Charlotte offered and for (reportedly) about the same money Houston was offering to bring him back.
He loves Phoenix, loves the town, loves the fans and loves the organization.
The Suns are also seriously considering signing Goran's brother Zoran Dragic after the FIBA World Cup of Basketball. Both play for their national team in FIBA and if Zoran does end up being part of the Suns roster then it almost guarantees Goran's future with Phoenix.
While the entire Phoenix Suns nation are holding their breath with the long standing stalemate between the Suns front office and Bledsoe's camp on a new contract extension, they can surely take a sigh of relief with Goran Dragic's loyalty and commitment.
