"Outlander" showrunner talks about realistic flogging scene with Jamie and Black Jack Randall and confirms that the second season will be basing from the second book of Diana Gabaldon's books.
Sam Heughan's character Jamie has been earning talks from the viewers as he was subjected to a "disturbingly realistic" flogging in the last episode of "Outlander." According to Vulture, "The blood flowing from Jamie's wounds, the skin curling off his back, the grimacing and gasping at every lash to the back, the pooling of slippery blood on the platform underneath him-none of it was pretty to watch."
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore admittedly took time in playing out the scene, which only uses three-minutes of the entire show. According to Moore, he wanted it to look painful and real, but not with the use of "slow blood spurts." Vulture says that Moore had the scene "intercut with numerous reaction shots from the crowd of about 100 extras, giving off the illusion that we saw more than we did."
Although it only took three-minutes of screen time, the scene took one whole day to film, shares Vulture. Moore said that it had been filmed in harsh climates back in February. Heughan recalled, "I remember it being absolutely freezing." The actor added: "I think my shaking because of the wind and the cold was pretty helpful for the character, because it made me feel like I'd have to get it done soon, or I'd freeze!"
This is not Heughan's first filmed whipping, however. Back in episode two, Vulture shares that the actor earned welts on his back despite the protective padding he wore. To prevent a repeat of the incident, Tobias Menzies (Black Jack Randall) allegedly underwent tutorial on using a whip properly.
Although the fans would agree that the flogging was painful to watch, Menzies' character, who he considers "a study in sadism," has a different opinion. Randall considers the work as "an exquisite, bloody masterpiece."
With the success of the new series and being picked up for a second season, many of Diana Gabaldon's fans are wondering about how the show will progress along with the books. On Twitter, Moore confirmed that the second season will be the entirety of the second book. "That's the plan," his response said. Hypable also shared that Gabaldon has said through Facebook that Claire (Caitriona Balfe) will be portrayed by the same actor despite a time jump.
Claire and Jamie's paths will remained linked, as the two have recently been engaged.
According to People's recap, Dougal (Graham McTavish) talked about the arrangement, which initially earned Claire's repulsed reply. However, Dougal clarified that he was not talking about an engagement between him and Claire. Instead, it will be between Claire and Jamie, who said that he did not care about Claire not being a virgin as long as she did not care about him being one.
