Yes, "The Last of Us" is basically just a zombie game, but it's a zombie game with an unbelievable twist- instead of the usual causes of zombie mayhem (infection, biological tampering, sometimes voodoo), "The Last of Us's" zombies are borne of a fungal infection.
It's a real life malady- some ants can be infected with a particular fungus, which takes root in their brain and gains control of the ant's body, using it to find more ants and spread more fungus.
"The Last of Us" is basically the same thing, but with people as the targets, not ants.
Gross, right?
Well "The Last of Us" has a movie adaptation in the works, and some new information has just come down the pipleline regard the actors who'll play its two lead characters, Joel and Ellie.
According to KpopStarz, Hugh Jackman and Chloe Grace Moretz are the frontrunners to play the two leads, an older, grizzled warrior and a younger woman forced to depend on each other in a fungus-based apocalypse.
KpopStarz also lists a number of other potential candidates, including Gerard Butler, Dylan McDermott, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Josh Brolin as Joel, and Ellen Page, Elle Fanning and Maisie Williams as Ellie.
KDrama Stars, though, pegs Butler as the most likely candidate for Joel, and not Jackman. It remains to be seen if either site is truly on the money- for all we new, the film's producers may be searching for someone else entirely.
Finally, here's a quote from "The Last of Us" creator Neil Druckmann, on the status of the movie so far (from IGN):
"It's an adaptation of the story of The Last of Us," says Druckmann. "As far as where we go and how we make it fit into a film, how it takes into account the unique properties of film... We're not sure yet. We're only just scratching the surface."
Later, he continued, "We don't know yet. We're still trying to figure it out. We're brainstorming some stuff, so we'll see where that goes."
