Z3 Tablet Compact Features
The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact features an 8-inch Triluminos Display with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. It is one of the thinnest and lightest tablets on the market today, with dimensions of 213x123x6.4mm and a weight of just 270 grams. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2.5 GHz quad-core chipset, Qualcomm Adreno 330 GPU, with Android Kitkat 4.4 installed out of the box. The tablet has 3 GB RAM and expandable internal memory up to 128 GB via microSD, with SDXC support.
Sony's site also cites that the tablet's display features X-Reality for mobile picture engine, Sony 3D Surround Sound technology, and Clear Audio+ sound improvement software. It has an 8.1 MP main camera with autofocus and a 2.2 MP front-facing camera capable of HD 1080p images for video chat. The tablet is powered by a 4500 mAh battery. It is also waterproof and dust-tight in compliance with IP65 and IP68.
Exclusive PS4 Remote Play Functionality
One of the most exciting features of the Xperia flagships announced - a feature which is included in the Z3 Tablet Compact - is the exclusive PS4 Remote Play functionality. The Z3 Tablet Compact is PlayStation-certified and allows users to use the tablet as a remote screen for playing PS4 games, or as a second screen to watch or control the PS4. According to Sony, they have equipped the Z3 Tablet Compact with the latest audio and video technologies to ensure the best gaming experience on the tablet.
Future owners of the Z3 Tablet Compact will have to wait until November 2014 to start using the functionality on their tablets. Android Police reports that Sony will be releasing custom mounts to their console controllers around the same time.
Pricing and Release
While no pricing was included in Sony's published press release, NDTV Gadgets reports the following pricing for the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact:
- EUR 379 (about $491) for the 16 GB Wi-Fi only version in Germany, France and Spain; EUR 399 (about $517) in Italy; GBP 329 (about $537) in the UK
- EUR 429 (about $555) for the 32 GB Wi-Fi only version in Germany, France and Spain; EUR 449 (about $582) in Italy; GBP 379 (about $618) in the UK
- EUR 479 (about $620) for the 16 GB LTE 4G version in Germany, France and Spain; EUR 499 (about $646) in Italy; GBP 429 (about $700) in the UK
Android Central reports that the tablet will be available later in September, but an NDTV Gadgets report says the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is now available for pre-order on Sony's website. A quick visit to the site confirms this report, with the page for the Z3 Tablet Compact featuring a "Register Now" above the color choices - black and white. Sony has not released announced an official release date at the time of writing, but they have cited the release in Japan to be "autumn," as reported by Android Police.
