Charlie Hunnam Explains Why He Quit "50 Shades of Grey:" "I Just Had Like...a Nervous Breakdown."

By

Remember back when Charlie Hunnam was set to play Christian Grey in "50 Shades of Grey?" His casting was a huge deal, but after a short time he quit the project and moved on to other things (like, say, the lead in Guy Ritchie's upcoming "King Arthur" epic, reported on by Deadline).

But we were never really sure just why Hunnam quit "50 Shades of Grey." Some say it was due to his busy schedule with "Sons of Anarchy" and multiple other films. Some say the obsessive behavior of "50 Shades of Grey" fans that drove him off the project.

Now, we know for certain, thanks to a report in "Fashion & Style." They've got the scoop on just why Hunnam left the project, and it comes straight from Hunnam's own mouth.

Here's what he said about leaving "50 Shades:"

"I was going to finish "Sons" at like 11 p.m. Friday night, get on the plane Saturday morning to Vancouver for "Fifty", missing the whole first week of rehearsal and start shooting Monday morning."

"And I was going to shoot that film, wrap that on the Wednesday and the following Monday I was going to start shooting "Crimson Peak" in Toronto. I just had like...frankly, something of a nervous breakdown."

Later, Hunnam adds that he truly loved the project and the character he was set to play, and that he was sad to leave it.

"It was just a s--- situation," said Hunnam. "I was really, really, sorry to do it. It was one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations."

However, Hunnam's back on his feet now- not only is he going to be King Arthur, but he's also got a major role in Guillermo del Toro's upcoming "Crimson Peak"- and according to another Hunnam quote from "Fashion & Style," his character's going to be quite different from who he usually plays.

"It's kind of a very sweet, shy, quiet, dorky dude who doesn't get the girl."

Sounds like a fun change of pace.
