BendGate in Question: How Easily Does an iPhone 6 Bend?

By

The #BendGate saga continues as Apple is faced with the consumers' question: How easily does an iPhone 6 bend?

"BendGate" started when a video showing a newly-unboxed iPhone 6 Plus being bent by hand with just a little pressure became viral on the Internet a week ago. The latest addition to the BendGate saga has been reported by BGR, where two UK kids filmed themselves bending several iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units in an Apple Store.

iPhone 6 Does Not Bend Easily - iPhone 6 Plus Does

According to BGR, the video of the two kids begins with them saying they have just finished bending several iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models in an Apple Store, then shifts to their actual footage of the event. The video shows that the iPhone 6 Plus bends easily, while the iPhone 6 does not bend as easily as they would have thought, requiring more pressure. They bent the iPhone 6 Plus until its screen was removed from the body.

Business Insider reports that earlier, Unbox Therapy, whose first video was the video that became viral and started BendGate, released a second video to demonstrate the authenticity of their claim that the iPhone 6 Plus bends easily. Prior to the video's release, photos of a slightly bent iPhone 6 Plus were already making their rounds online.

Not as Easy as It Seems, Says Consumer Reports

Earlier this week, Consumer Reports released the results of their own BendGate experiment to determine exactly how much pressure it requires to bend the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 S. CBS News reports that their findings reveal it takes much more pressure than Internet videos imply.

The Consumer Reports' findings say the iPhone 6 was the easiest to bend along with the HTC One, but even it requires 70 pounds of pressure to bend permanently. It requires 100 pounds of pressure before the screen pops off. The iPhone 6 Plus, on the other hand, bent at 90 pounds of pressure, and its screen came off at 110 pounds of pressure.

Both an Apple representative in the store where the UK kids bent the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units and the Consumer Reports findings claim that under typical use, the phones should not bend easily. According to Apple, they have only received 9 reports of bent iPhone 6 Plus units on their first six days of release.
