"Captain America 3" Might Retire the Captain, in Order to Prepare for an Avengers-Less "Avengers 3"

By

The closer we get to "Avengers 3" (and thus, the end of most of our key Avengers' contracts), the more we start to wonder just what Marvel's going to do with its most famous superheroes. What happens to Captain America? And Thor? And Iron Man?

Well, at least in the case of Captain America, we have a new clue. Enstars has just published a piece claiming that "Avengers 3" may be vastly structurally different than its counterparts- in that it would contain next to no actual Avengers.

And since "Captain America 3" is coming before "Avengers 3," that means we'd need to handle Cap's absence in his upcoming film.

We don't know much about the story to "Captain America 3," but Enstars has some basic extrapolation. Given the ending of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," the third film will probably see Cap and his best friend The Falcon (along with Black Widow, maybe) cruising across the countryside to recruit Cap's former partner, Bucky Barnes, back onto the side of the good guys.

ScienceFiction.com bolsters these reports about "Avengers 3," claiming that there are plenty of other heroes in the MCU that could fill in for the departing A-listers: The Guardians of the Galaxy, The Agents of SHIELD, the Defenders, and Mockingbird (soon to be introduced on "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.").

Ok, now for something slightly more ridiculous. According to WhateveraSpiderCan.com, "Captain America 3" might involve the "Secret Wars" comic storyline- a storyline where Captain America and Spider-Man were very closely involved.

Here's a quote from the Russo brothers, directors of "Winter Soldier:"

"Listen, when I started collecting, The Secret Wars was one of the first books I ever bought, so that's always been an obsession of mine to see something of that scale done - a crossover. I don't know if that would ever be possible, with all the different situations at the studios. But I would love to see a lot of characters on screen together."

Does this mean Sony might be giving up their Spider-Man rights? Who knows. But it's certainly a fun rumor.
