Amal Alamuddin to change name to Clooney? Why are people unhappy about her decision?

By

Newly married lawyer Amal Alamuddin is back on the job and looking good with a new name courtesy of husband George Clooney, but her decision has been met with arguments from all sides.

Amal Alamuddin has chosen to remind George Clooney of their wedding every time they make cocktails, as reportedly the 36-year-old lawyer has bought handmade Murano cocktail glasses as a post-wedding gift, shares Just Jared. The glasses come from Venice, where they had their wedding just recently. E! News has a source saying that Alamuddin had the glasses ordered after noticing that George kept admiring them at the wedding celebrations.

Alamuddin has been the center of the spotlight once news of her wedding preparations with George went underway, but Glamour wants people to remember that she "is more than just a bride." Alamuddin is known for her work at Doughty Street Chambers where she may look like a model while meeting with clients, but is advising on how Greece can take back the Parthenon Marbles from the United Kingdom.

However, it's not just her fashion style that has people talking.

The Guardian reports that Alamuddin may go with Amal Alamuddin-Clooney or just Amal Clooney from now on. Being a prominent human rights lawyer, many do not understand her decision to change her name, and the article adds, "Whether or not women take their husband's name upon marriage fires up feminists like almost nothing else."

Alamuddin on her own is known for her work as a lawyer, but being recently married to actor George Clooney has given her an almost celebrity status. Alamuddin, who is currently advising on whether the Parthenon Marbles should be reclaimed is reportedly being questioned for her reasons on taking up Clooney's name, but The Guardian clarifies, "Naming practices are deeply embedded traditions with very long histories, and they differ significantly depending on the culture to which you belong."

Furthermore, the article adds, "The political valences attached to taking your husband's name are different for different groups of women."

The Guardian also considers it arrogant that keeping one's maiden name is okay, but that "other perspectives" are not acknowledged.
