Android L 5.0 Lollipop promises visual overhaul, to ship with Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 in November; Motorola and other devices to update soon

Google's latest mobile OS offering, Android 5.0 Lollipop, will be shipping with new devices Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 and will be available for other Nexus devices shortly. Other brands like Motorola have also promised to roll out the update as soon as possible.

After being announced in June, Google Android 5.0 Lollipop was made official on October 15 and is going to be released in the upcoming weeks, Expert Reviews confirmed. According to Expert Reviews, Lollipop will be using the "Material Design" scheme, which will improve the visual appeal of the OS. "Apparently Google drew inspiration from pens and inks, with every icon and user interface element casting an accurate shadow to give a sense of depth. Everything animates as you touch it, with objects flying into view and tapped icons rippling like puddle," the site shared. Additionally, "The app drawer has an opaque white background, appearing like a piece of paper and making it much easier to read text versus transparent app drawers."

One of the most notable changes to be expected from Lollipop are the home screen, pull-down menu, lock screen, onscreen navigations, and settings page. Widgets and Google apps are also being redesigned to fit the theme. Lollipop will be a major competitor of Apple iOS 8 and will allegedly be highlighting Google's apps on default. Expert Reviews shares that Google's apps will be in three folders located on the home screen.

Previously known to be Android L, Lollipop is expected to improve battery life. It will also be using 64-bit processor support.

While Nexus 9 tablets and Nexus 6 smartphones will ship with Lollipop out of the box, other devices such as the Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 will have to wait for the over-the-air updates. Citing AndroidPolice as source, Expert Reviews continues to share that Nexus 7 variants will be receiving the first OTA update on November 3. It will take a little longer for Nexus 5 and Nexus 4 to receive the updates, the article continues. Latin Post thinks that Lollipop will come for most Nexus devices as soon as Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 start shipping.

While it hasn't rolled out the updates for Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 devices, Google has released a developer preview of Lollipop, which eager users of the two Nexus devices can already use. This is not recommended for those without any experience in flashing firmware and using custom ROMs, the article warns.

Non-Nexus users will also get Lollipop in due time. Motorola device owners may not have to wait for long, as Latinos Post mentions Motorola having released a statement promising to bring fast updates. The statement included a list of devices to be updated to Lollipop such as Moto X (1st and 2nd Generation), Moto G ( 1st and 2nd Generation), Moto G 4G LTE, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, Droid Mini, and Moto E. Motorola is behind the engineering of Nexus 6.
