Chris Pratt and His Raptor Sidekicks Fight a Mutant Hybrid In First "Jurassic World" Trailer

By

Wasn't the trailer for "Jurassic World" supposed to go online on Thanksgiving Day? That's what IGN said, stating specifically that there was a countdown timer on JurassicWorld.com, that it was counting down to Thanksgiving day, and that the end of that timer would come with an official trailer for "Jurassic World."

And if you click over to JurassicWorld.com, you'll find that countdown timer clicking away, perfectly normal (as I write this, it's on two days, three hours, fifty minutes and twenty-seven seconds).

And yet... here's the official trailer for "Jurassic World." As released via Universal's official pipeline. Viewable right after this sentence.

Well, what do you think? There are some obvious bright spots- that Mosasaurus (SO HUGE), the introduction of the mutant D-Rex (even if we don't see any real glimpses of it, other than its feet), and the reveal that Chris Pratt's character is working with the velociraptors! All of that is great.

But doesn't it feel just a little underwhelming? This is "Jurassic World." The same franchise as one of the greatest summer blockbusters of all time. We could really use some effects work that's more to the standards of the original film (although perhaps all the practical effects shots are too slow and still to use in a fast-paced trailer). And maybe an ending shot with more punch than Velociraptors running alongside Chris Pratt.

There's some speculation that Universal dropped the "Jurassic World" trailer early to compete with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," as J.J. Abrams has revealed that the first trailer for the new "Star Wars" will be released on Friday. The hype for "The Force Awakens" is likely much higher than for "Jurassic World," and if "The Force Awakens" released its trailer a day after "Jurassic World," "Jurassic World" would get one day of buzz before being blown out of the water. This way, at least "Jurassic World" gets a few days to itself.

Check back soon for the latest on "Jurassic Park."
