No Red Skull in "Captain America: Civil War"? That appeared to be the idea when the actor who played the iconic comic book villain was asked about his role in the sequel.
Hugo Weaving, who played Johann Schmidt in "Captain America: The First Soldier," had a chat with The Hollywood Reporter about his role in the sequel. Screenrant noted that it is standard practice in Marvel nowadays to have actors agree to a long-term contract because of their characters appearing in sequels. When Weaving's character was obviously absent in "Winter Soldier," there is at least an assurance that he will be present in the next film. But from his comment to THR, it appears that he too, has no idea what's in store for him at least in the cinematic universe.
"I haven't talked to anyone about it, so, yeah, we'll just have to wait and see. No idea at all."
On the other hand, MovieWeb said that Daniel Brühl has been signed up as the main villain for "Civil War" that there was an idea that Weaving might have been replaced with a young actor to play the character. However, given the fact that the Marvel universe is interconnected and vast, it is highly likely that Weaving will appear as the Red Skull in the other films already lined up by Marvel in the next few years. Moreover, ComicBook.com believes that Brühl's character might not be the Red Skull but a different, more cruel one. The site thinks that the German actor may play Baron Zemo, who is one of Captain America's longest-running nemesis. variety suggested that Brühl could also play Baron Mordo. Although he is not a major player in the "Captain America" franchise, he is a potential lead villain in Marvel's other upcoming movie "Doctor Strange."
"Captain America: Civil War" will debut in theaters on May 6, 2016.
