Google has finally released its next big Android update - the 5.0 Lollipop firmware. However, users who already upgraded to it have expressed encountering more problems. Fortunately, there are several ways to go around some of the issues before another update comes.
WiFi Connectivity Issues
One of the most persistent problems across all Android firmware updates is connectivity, particularly when connecting to WiFi networks. Gizmodo reports users complaining about dropped or no connections at all following their 5.0 upgrade, and cites devices like the Nexus 5 and 10 to be most affected.
Temporary fixes include the following:
- Click "Forget Network" on the WiFi network's menu. Go back to the WiFi network list and click on the network for several seconds before reconnecting.
- Reset the device / restore factory settings (but make sure to back up important files before resetting).
No More Power Menu Options
Another issue users had with the Lollipop 5.0 update is the removal of the power menu when users press the power button. In previous Android firmware versions, users are presented with a menu when they press the power button, which includes Power Off, Reboot, and other phone settings. However, in 5.0, the only option that appears is Power Off according to PC World.
Google confirmed that they have removed the menu, so technically this is not an issue. They have also refused to add the reboot option in the power button functions. However, users who feel inconvenienced may download power widgets like Power Widget Lite to gain easy access to the power options they have lost following the 5.0 update.
Invert Colors Toggle
Users exploring the new features of Lollipop 5.0 may have encountered the Invert Colors toggle, which changes the color and contrast settings of a phone. This may be an issue for users who accidentally activate the toggle, but the function is there for a reason - Google added the function to enhance the user experience of color-blind Android device owners.
Simply navigate back to the Invert Colors toggle and turn it off if accidentally turned on. Users who do not need the toggle should leave the settings alone in order to keep the normal color settings of their devices. Note, however, that turning it on even for one time may change the settings of the phone permanently.
