A Samsung official recently confirmed the company's plans to launch handsets with flexible displays in the coming year.
The news comes from Motley Fool, who reports that while no design has been finalized yet, Samsung Display Vice President Lee Chang-Hoon was quoted in a recent New York investor event stating their plans "to provide consumers with a product that has a flexible display by the end of 2015."
"However, nothing has been decided on the finished product," he added.
But while there is no final design yet, the popular speculation is that the company's next expected flagship, the Galaxy S6, may be the flexible phone consumers can anticipate next year. However, this does not add up to the expected announcement and release of the phone, with flexible phones said to be available by the end of 2015 and the S6 expected to be announced and launched in the first quarter of the year.
Apple, Xiaomi May Be Left Behind
Creating foldable phones with flexible displays is possible thanks to OLED screens according to another report by the Motley Fool. More recently, Samsung has achieved success in using OLED screens for the Galaxy Note Edge, which has received positive reviews for originality. Meanwhile, its biggest competitor, Apple, is still using LCD screens and is not expected to make the OLED transition anytime soon.
Samsung has been struggling to keep up with the competition recently, with Apple maintaining its hold on its market and Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi rising among the ranks. According to analysts, Samsung's success and leadership lies on the success of this new endeavor, and the brand may leave its competitors far behind.
Samsung remains critical of Xiaomi saying that it may not be as successful outside China according to Android Authority. Senior VP and Head of IR at Samsung Electronics, Robert Yi, indicated: "They have created a good user experience that caters for the needs of Chinese consumers," he said. "But I don't know if it will work outside of China."
