One of the biggest and most anticipated music events in Asia is happening in hours via the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA 2014) to be held in Hong Kong today, December 3, at 8-12pm KST.
Other than the biggest names in the K-pop industry, this year's award ceremonies will be graced by special guest, American singer-songwriter John Legend. The R&B singer will be joining idol groups EXO, SISTAR, INFINITE, as well as singers G-Dragon, Taeyang, and IU. Idol groups Block B, BTS, and WINNER will also be featured.
Billboard noted that MAMA 2014 can be compared as Asia's response to the MTV Video Music Awards.
John Legend brings honor to this year's music awards, which was graced by music icon Stevie Wonder in the previous year. The music legend shared the stage with Korean diva and SISTAR member Hyorin and Chinese singer-actor Aaron Kwok. Other than performances from top K-pop acts, the MAMA 2013 was also graced by other global artists such as Icona Pop, Ylvis, and Paris Hilton.
Meanwhile, Soompi reported recently that a rep from Mnet revealed John Legend's interest in performing on stage with Tiffany of Girls' Generation. On December 2, the rep told The Fact news, "John Legend expressed his interest in performing with Tiffany, and SM Entertainment accepted. They are currently working out the details of the performance concept and song name, etc."
However, it was also reported that Tiffany's managing agency, SM Entertainment is still positively looking over the stage collaboration offer. Later, fans will get to see the "All of Me" singer perform a duet with the titan girl group member.
According to Billboard, 2014's K-pop scene was dominated with ballads such as Taeyang's "Eyes, Nose, Lips," Park Hyo Shin's "Wildflowers," and Hyorin's "Goodbye," which all topped the K-Pop Hot 100.
Meanwhile, voting for the nominated artists was recently closed. Mnet has recorded over 68 million participating votes coming from Korea, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the United States.
Mnet America, an English-language Asian TV network, will air the award ceremonies on its cable channel. It will also host livestream through the website of talk show "Danny From LA," as well through YouTube.
