In last week's season finale titled "The Last Stand," "The Legend of Korra" had some of its fans rejoiced when major characters Avatar Korra and Asama sharing a tender moment as they walked into a spirit portal, Screencrush said. The site also noted that the two held hands, and at one point, turned to face one another tenderly in the shadow of the mountains that was said to be a bisexual flag.
In creator Bryan Konietzko's Tumblr post, he confirmed that the Korrasami coupling indeed is true, and everyone has to deal with it. He wrote, "Korrasami is canon. You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story. We received some wonderful press in the wake of the series finale at the end of last week, and just about every piece I read got it right: Korra and Asami fell in love," he continued. "Were they friends? Yes, and they still are, but they also grew to have romantic feelings for each other."
Co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino agreed in a separate Tumblr entry. He said, "Our intention with the last scene was to make it as clear as possible that yes, Korra and Asami have romantic feelings for each other. The moment where they enter the spirit portal symbolizes their evolution from being friends to being a couple."
On the other hand, the Korrasami moment is among the few same-sex relationship moments that are only get to be shown on television at least. A Vanity Fair piece by Joanna Robinson read that the introduction of what appeared to be adult topics like same-sex relationships in children's entertainment would still have a long way to go. But Robinson commends the creators and Nickelodeon's gravitas to introduce such topics and having faith in their viewers.
She ended, "But American kids' shows have a long way to go before L.G.B.T. story lines are considered a matter of course. And none of those examples above quite match Korra and Asami's climactic spirit portal moment."
