"Downton Abbey" is blazing through its fifth season. We're already two episodes in, and things are starting to get scandalous- especially considering the show's set in the early 20th century. But where is the season heading? Thanks to a recent synopsis released by PBS, we might know a little more than before.
First, there's what happened this week on the PBS series. On the last "Downton Abbey," (via the LA Times) one of the biggest storylines was that of Lady Mary and Lord Gillingham- two characters that are heating up. The two are engaged to be married, but they've never had sex before (which should be a little obvious, as this is, again, set in the early 20th century).
But they'd like to take each other for a test drive, so they acquire a little bit of contraception, sneak off to Liverpool, and arrange for a secret tryst.
How will their relationship change in the next episode? Well, the synopsis for the third episode has been released by PBS- here's what it says.
"Mary checks in to a hotel and checks out a potential mate. The specter of Green is revived when the police come to Downton. And a secret from Violet's past is revealed."
So, we know that Mary will at least be "checking out" Lord Gillingham. But on the same page, a description for the episode preview adds another juicy detail- "New romances are recipes for disaster, and old scandals emerge."
If we're to assume that Lady Mary and Lord Gillingham's alone time is that "new romance" in question... it's safe to say their tryst isn't going to go so well.
As well, Time recently put out a piece on the last episode of "Downton Abbey," highlighting the sex book Lady Mary was holding before she sent Anna off to get her some birth control. Apparently it's a very real book- written by Marie Stokes, it popularized the idea that women could enjoy sex too.
Hopefully, we'll be seeing more of this in future "Downton Abbey" episodes. The next episode will air on January 18th on PBS. Until then, check back for the latest "Downton Abbey" news.
