"Beauty and the Beast" News: Emma Watson Lands as Princess Belle on Live-Action Disney Film; "Harry Potter" Star To Sing and Dance

By

Live-action Disney movies are the new big thing. Already we've had "Maleficent" last year, and a new non-animated update on "Cinderella" hitting theaters in just a few short months (don't forget the live-action "The Jungle Book" remake and the "Alice in Wonderland" sequel that are both on the way).

One of the House of Mouse's many, many live-action updates has just taken a huge step forward, and cast its leading role. In the upcoming "Beauty and the Beast" adaptation, Emma Watson will be playing the role of Belle.

The news first came from Watson herself, who posted the surprising reveal on her Facebook page.

"I'm finally able to tell you... that I will be playing Belle in Disney's new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I'll get to dance to 'Be Our Guest' and sing 'Something There'. My six year old self is on the ceiling - heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can't wait for you to see it. Emma xx"

The Hollywood Reporter has more on this story- Bill Condon, who directed the final two films in the "Twilight" series, will be directing "Beauty and the Beast." The film will begin production this year, though it has no official release date.

But as excited as we might be for "Beauty and the Beast," the movie's still got some work to do to make sure it comes out a success. Bringing the Beast to life onscreen is certainly going to be a challenge (will Disney use CGI, or makeup and prosthetic effects?). The last film to attempt a live-action "Beauty and the Beast" was ripped apart by critics and audiences- 2011's "Beastly," holding a mere 21% on Rotten Tomates. Hopefully, this new Beast can fare better than that one.
