As to what extent, Landgraf did not elaborate though. So speculations were formed regarding the upcoming season's possible changes in storyline and casts based on Tweets and clues from the fourth season's finale.
In a Tweet of Ryan Murphy, the show's co-creator, he mentioned about Jessica Lange and hinted about their parting ways as far as the show is concerned. To quote Murphy, "Thank you Jessica...for everything. Always."
Before the Season 4 started, Lange had mentioned about quitting the show after the 'Freak Show', the season's finale for a brand new pursuit in life. In a report published on the Huffington Post the veteran actress was quoted saying, "I'm going to do the next season [Season 4] of this and hopefully a play and then maybe one or two movies and then I think -- I feel like maybe then it's time to start something brand new in life."
When Landgraf was asked about Lange probably leaving the show (whether on her own choice or as a management decision), he said he does not have the clue. The FX Network boss explained that, while he is aware of the time and tone of the stories as well as of the characters, he does not know about the cast. According to him it is Murphy who decides on the cast. He also expressed his hopes about Murphy opting for a contemporary setting for the upcoming season.
If the producers of the show would indeed let go of Lange's character in the story, then it would mean one thing: casting off of a main character. The lack of main character would allow the show's producers to explore many different stories, not to mention it would revive the brand that the horror story was known for but slowly lose as it leans on stories with central characters.
Without focusing on one or two characters only, the show's producers would have the opportunity to present different stories and throws in new characters in the show. The shows fan would consider that - introduction of new casts - refreshing.
