Exclusivity has been used as a strategy for enticing and keeping customers loyal to a brand. Smartphone manufacturer giants are no exception to it. But for an upcoming phone manufacturer like OnePlus, can it make the cut?
If the supply issues are any indication of prospective users clamoring for this product, then its standard method of selling handsets is not a big deal at all. OnePlus has been offering exclusive invites to prospective buyers through their website, although recently the China-based manufacturer had conducted occasional online flash sales. Those too proves to be a success as phones become sold out in an hour.
As a manufacturer that openly admitted its experimental approach in reaching out to target market, changes here in there can be expected including its method of selling. Among them are the weekly open sales to allow buyers to purchase OnePlus One phones even without an invite. It is scheduled every Tuesday starting at 8 a.m. GMT (3 a.m. EST). Simply put, prospective buyers will have 24 hours starting Tuesday to grab the 16GB Silk White or 64GB Sandstone Black OnePlus One.
Would it mean OnePlus is letting go of its original selling method? No, because it will continue to send invites to friends of customers that purchase their phones via the open sales method. In fact, it will remain the standard method of purchasing OnePlus phones. This is according to OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei.
The OnePlus One boasts features that can match those of Samsung Galaxy S5 for less than a fraction of its price. Hence, it comes with a 5.5-inch display screen, 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 3100mAh battery. That's not to mention that it has customizable OS and 1080p display.
Cons like no micro SD slot, oversensitive gestures, and non removable battery are considered minor. After all, OnePlus One phones are a whole lot of a smartphone for its $299 (starting) price.
