Sister Wives main man Kody Brown calls it legal restructuring, but his divorce with first wife, Meri, and marriage to fourth wife, Robyn, may have had other reasons as well, including possibly adopting Robyn's children with a previous marriage and Meri wanting the divorce for herself.
Despite opening up about the decision to marry Robyn, Kody has not mentioned the actual reason for the change, Wet Paint mentions. This had people talking and speculating, and even taking sides on the new family structure.
The more prevalent reason for the Kody-Meri divorce shortly followed by the Kody-Robyn marriage is health insurance for Robyn's three children from a previous marriage. Robyn has custody over Aurora, Breanna, and Dayton, who has "various medical issues."
Considering this, it is speculated that Kody might have wanted to step in to ensure the same protection for Robyn's children by legally adopting them into the marriage. His marriage to Robyn will not affect the coverage for Kody's children with his other three wives. As Enstarz says, "His other children are his biologically, and could be protected as his dependents on health insurance no matter if he is legally married to their mothers."
Moreover, other reasons have also come up, including Robyn possibly being pregnant. "Robyn is the youngest of the wives-and most likely to be the one to carry another child," the article says. Meanwhile, Meri is unable to conceive more children after her daughter, Mariah, who is already off to college.
Though many fans have shown support for Kody's legal wife of 24 years, Meri herself asked that people become more understanding.
Responding to a Twitter user who is "disgusted" by what Kody and Robyn did to her, Meri tweets, "Don't be disgusted by what you don't understand. Give it a few more weeks. For me." This has sparked rumors that Meri herself might have wanted the divorce because of her unhappiness in her union with Kody.
Talking to Us Weekly, Kody also says the decision has been made "together as a family." However, Kody is apparently the one who always gets the last say in family matters.
Robyn joined the family in 2010 and was only "spiritually" married to Kody until December 2014, when Kody tied the knot with her at a civil wedding.
