Is a "Legend of Korra" Spin-Off Premiere Possible? Live-Action "Korra" in Green Light after LGBT Support Aims to Revive the Series

By

Although we haven't heard anything yet from Nickelodeon or the series' creators, the Internet still churns with excitement over something new from "The Legend of Korra"- either a live-action TV spin-off, a new animated series on Netflix, or even a movie.

Those are the three major options that have been discussed amongst the show's fans in the last few weeks, and while none of them has had any official confirmation, it sounds like a live-action series is the most likely option right now. For one, International Business Times is claiming that Netflix might consider a live-action spin-off to the series, and on top of that, they're reporting that fans have created a hypothetical live-action cast for the show. The cast includes: Julia Jones, Ken Watanabe, Kimiko Glenn, Harry Shum, Jr., Godfrey Gao, Michelle Yeoh and Daniel Dae Kim).

If anything, it almost seems like the show's LGBT legacy would be enough to propel it into a new spin-off. The idea of Korrasami- that two of the show's main female characters would end up an item in the last episode- is something that's almost entirely unheard of in American cartoons. And as Technician notes, most cartoons that attempt any kind of same-sex coupling are outright stopped from doing so by the networks in charge. That "Korra" could put in any kind of LGBT romance is a minor miracle- especially given that Korra and Asami aren't even allowed to kiss. They just hold hands.

So a "Legend of Korra" spin-off might just be able to make it on those credentials. But just in case, there's always the possibility of a movie. As creator Bryan Konietzko said to the Wall Street Journal back before "Korra" began, he'd be very interested in making a new "Avatar" movie.

"We would love to. I think Mike and I would absolutely love to do feature animation. Either another story, or it if worked out, one in the "Avatar" world. We would be really excited."

So one way or another (movie, Netlix or live-action series), it can't be too long until we hear something spinning off from "The Legend of Korra."
