"The Lego Movie" is huge right now. Despite not even being nominated for an Oscar, it's the only animated movie anyone can talk about ("Big Hero 6" may have won Best Animated Feature, but its the snub that ends up getting "The LEGO Movie" more buzz"). But can that buzz last forever? It's possible that "The LEGO Movie's" fame and fortune might not be able to carry it as far as the series has planned.
Already, there's trouble brewing on the horizon. Cinema Blend notes that "The Lego Movie 2" is planning a story that's set four years after the first film- but that means that, ideally, they'd need to film the live-action segments four years in advance as well (otherwise, the child actor used in those sequences wouldn't look four years older). That's a major issue, as it might delay the filming of "The LEGO Movie 2" for years. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller may have thought of some kind of plan to combat this, but in the Cinema Blend piece, they admit that "it'll be several years before we shoot that part for sure."
Another potential pitfall- without the first film's directors behind the camera, would future "LEGO Movie" sequels capture the same magic? The franchise is already spinning off into multiple parts, with a "LEGO Batman" film and a "LEGO Ninjago" film both on the way. If it's spread too thing- and if Lord and MIller can't be around to help oversee things (they've recently confirmed that a potential "23 Jump Street"/"Men in Black" crossover could be happening, and taking up a large part of their time), the franchise might not be the same.
Still, if it's worth anything, people absolutely love "The LEGO Movie." Even the film's competition love it- at this year's Oscars, the directors of other hit animated movies all admitted how much the film meant to them. So maybe, just on that alone, the LEGO franchise might survive.
