The battle for the rights to "Spider-Man" waged for years, and it's finally come to an end, now that Marvel and Sony have agreed to share the character between two studios and two separate franchises. And now, another battle is starting to brew, just as that last one ended. Apparently, finding a director for the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot is proving especially difficult for the studios involved.
According to Ecumenical News, Drew Goddard is the top choice to helm the next "Spider-Man" movie. Goddard's superhero resume is superb- he was originally chosen to helm Marvel's "Daredevil" series for Netflix, and then left that project to take on Sony's "Sinister Six" Spider-Man spin-off. Now that "Sinister Six" is dead (according to some rumors, anyway), Goddard is a free man with a lot of comic book street cred. He also directed the film "Cabin in the Woods," which has gone on to become a cult classic.
However, Goddard's not the only director fighting for the "Spider-Man" gig. Cinema Blend reports that multiple filmmakers are "in contention" and that there are "several others" who might be just as likely to get the job as Goddard is.
One of those directors is actually two people: the Russo brothers, who helmed last year's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and received overwhelming praise for doing so. Screen Rant reports that the two have just signed a major deal with Sony- could they be involved with "Spider-Man?" Right now, their deal doesn't involve any specific movies, but it does begin right when the Russos begin directing "Captain America: Civil War"- a film that has long been rumored to include "Spider-Man."
Both the Russos and Drew Goddard would be excellent choices, though, given their previous films and their enthusiasm about comic book properties. Spidey's in good hands either way.
