Spider-Man's joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that's a huge deal. But most people are focusing on only one part of this deal's hugeness- Spider-Man hanging out with Iron Man, Captain America, and all the other classic Marvel heroes. There's an entirely different part of this, that's just as important and that most people seem to be forgetting.
Namely: when Spider-Man joins the Marvel fold, so do all his villains.
It's an idea posed by Forbes, which claims that now that Spider-Man is officially usable in the Marvel Universe, his villains will have to follow suit. And it makes sense- obviously, it's not just Spider-Man that's included in this Marvel/Sony deal, but Peter Parker's friends, relatives and nemeses, too.
Which brings up an important topic- does this mean Spider-Man villains could fight in other Marvel films? Think about it- now, it's possible that the next Captain America or Avengers film could use a Spider-Man villain as its antagonist, instead of the crop of characters Marvel already had a license to. It's an important point, as Spider-Man has one of the richest rogues' galleries in all of superhero comics, and now that entire crop of villains is at Marvel's disposal.
But which Spider-Man villains would make the most sense fighting someone else besides Spider-Man? The Sinister Six is always a possibility, as is Venom. Also, characters like Hammerhead and Tombstone would make perfect villains for Daredevil, Luke Cage and other street-level Marvel characters. There's also the possibility of Marvel characters joining the Spider-Man film franchise- Nick Fury would make an especially great mentor for a young Peter Parker. And how do you think Nick Fury and Aunt May would get along?
It's a whole wide world out there for Marvel movies, and it just got a little wider.
Marvel's Spider-Man reboot premieres on July 28, 2017.
