The Ring is one of the most beloved (also, terrifying) horror films of the last few decades. So it's no surprise that another The Ring film is in the works- this one, the third American film to come from the franchise (there have also been several Japanese originals), will be titled Rings, and will be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez.
And now, we know the first basic story details about Rings. Apparently, the film is a prequel to the original The Ring, and may follow a young Samara as she first comes into her terrifying supernatural abilities, and learns how to wield them. An official source close to the next The Ring film stated:
"Our sources tell us that the new The Ring is actually a prequel, and takes place before the 2002 remake that starred Naomi Watts as a woman uncovering the mystery behind a haunted VHS tape. Rings will take place years before the creation of said tape and tell the origin of Samara's reign of terror."
As well, We Got This Covered adds that Rings may involve "creepy dolls and cemeteries"- both of which are a staple of the horror genre. The film is apparently already in pre-production- undergoing test shoots and vacation scouts to prep the film crew for the actual filming of Rings.
Now, on the one hand, too much background info in a prequel can stop that prequel dead in its tracks. It's happened before, like when the Star Wars prequels were so obsessed with explaining every little detail (say, the Midicholrians) that the movies themselves weren't that great. Hopefully, Rings can avoid that pitfall, and be a standard, absolutely terrifying movie. Maybe not as good as the original (that's a film that's hard to top) but a solid horror movie nonetheles.
Rings will premiere on November 13, 2015. We're almost theeeeeeeeeere.
