It remains unclear if tech giant Sony will upgrade its Xperia phones to the 5.1 Lollipop version. The Android 5.1 update can let cellphone users enjoy improvements ranging from better battery to device protection and system stability. Other devices, specifically Nexus devices, have begun receiving the said update.
There was an announcement that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update was going out for the Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra this coming May or June. To date, there's some uncertainty about that. Sony did live up to its promise of bringing the Android 5.0 to the Z series lineup. Rollouts differ, though, by market and carrier.
Android 5.1 is touted as the answer to cellphone issues like app crash arising from grave memory leak. Smartphones equipped with the Lollipop version 5.1 lets transitions between apps and applications run silky smooth. On top of that, Lollipop can conveniently add juice or extend battery life up to around 90 minutes. Though reports circulated that development is underway for several Sony Xperia devices to run the Android 5.1, handset owners are not able to run the fresh Android OS on their Xperia smartphones yet. For now, Sony has quickened its pace and rolled out the Android 5.0 Lollipop to its Z2 and Z3 models. Android 5.0 Lollipop was noted to be riddled with bugs, though.
Nonetheless, it can be noted that the initial Lollipop update brought improvements in terms of a fresher, more streamlined or minimalist look, multiple user profiles, easier transfer of applications to the SD card from internal memory, plus new look notifications. With the Lollipop version 5.1, faster and more responsive smartphones will be within the grasp of discerning phone users. They can also have very clear calls with HD Voice with compatible Android 5.1 gadgets.
Industry insiders and Sony smartphone users have yet to hear official announcements from the tech company about Android 5.1 updates for the Xperia line.
