Sony seeks new trademark for 'The Last Guardian': What it means for the game's future

Sony continues its pursuit of completing "The Last Guardian" as it files for what will now be its third trademark for the game. Sony filed for the trademark back on March 12 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. As of now, the trademark is still pending approval.

The company has taken a proactive approach to filing the trademark after facing issues early on. The game's trademark was said to have expired back in 2012.

Sony also acknowledged a lapse earlier in the year with regards to the title's trademark, according to IGN. The company said the trademark issues in February were primarily caused by their inability to periodically check in and clarify the "intent to use" nature of the trademark they filed for the game, according to Polygon.

Despite the issues concerning the game's trademark, Sony has confirmed that the title is still in development.

"The Last Guardian" was originally announced back at E3 in 2009, but the title has since been plagued by multiple issues combining to further delay the launch of the game, according to Den of Geek.

Since the announcement, a bigger problem than trademark lapses caused the game to be set back with the its executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama and producer Kenji Kaido leaving as it was in development. The Team ICO and Sony creation is about a boy and a gigantic flying creature with characteristics resembling that of many different animals, according to Polygon.

The continuing delays and rumors of cancellation surrounding the title have prompted Sony's Head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida to publicly comment about the matter. "I will say this. When we cancel a title, and it is something we have announced already, we'll say so," said Yoshida.

Some of the latest rumors surrounding the game suggest that it could be finding a different home, moving from its originally planned destination being the Playstation 3 to the newer Playstation 4.
