'Iron Man 4' Trailer, Spoilers: Crossover possible to save Robert Downey, Jr.'s reputation? New cameo roles rumored

By

Iron Man 4 could be just the film Robert Downey, Jr. needs. Though he's been massively successful with the Avengers and Iron Man film series, and the Sherlock Holmes series as well, that's the extent of Downey, Jr.'s success these days. His other recent outings, like The Judge or Due Date, haven't exactly held up well.

But if Iron Man 4 is what Downey, Jr. needs, what's the status on Iron Man 4? It's not clear. Marvel's yet to make any official announcements on the film, and while Downey original announced the film with huge amounts of enthusiasm on the Ellen DeGeneres show, there have been zero updates since then. In fact, Downey actual downplayed the Iron Man 4 news after that first announcement, sending the fans into a state of confusion.

At this point, can Downey even cut it as an action hero anymore? Christian Today notes that Liam Neeson recently announced that he'll be retiring from action films soon, due to his age. While Downey still has a decade or so before he's Neeson's age, his reputation as an action star is something to consider- and it may be time for him to pass Iron Man onto someone else. Or maybe limit the character to crossover appearances in other Marvel films.

That honestly might be the best thing for Downey. Iron Man is without a doubt the most popular character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if he was to make regular, smaller appearances in multiple other films, fans would see far more of Iron Man than they do right now. He's already been confirmed for Captain America: Civil War, and apperances in Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man are both rumored at this point.

Is it possible? Potentially. But given the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already been detailed up through 2018, it's doubtful we'll see anything concrete on Iron Man 4 for at least a few years.
