Prometheus 2 was hotly anticipated as the latest installment of the Alien franchise. But it was also hotly anticipated when it was the only film in the Alien franchise. Since then, Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 has shaken up the world of Alien, and it may have pushed Prometheus 2 to the backburner, unless the two films end up working together.
A report gives some basic details on Alien 5 that relate the film to Prometheus 2, and suggests that the two films are now being developed in sync with each other, and may involve similar plot threads. Apparently, Blomkamp's Alien 5 will be produced by Ridley Scott and his Scott Free production company. As well, the reports claim that Alien 5 will be set hundreds of years after Prometheus 2- and while Prometheus 2 is expected to follow Prometheus closely and be set in the not-too-distant future, Alien 5 would then be set far in the distant reaches of the future.
Alien 5 also takes place between Aliens and Alien 3 in the official Alien 5, and will be based specifically off the concept artwork of Blomkamp's that was so popular it convinced Fox to move forward on Alien 5 with Blomkamp as the director and main creative force.
As well, it's been revealed that Alien 5 will focus specifically on the Xenomorph and various iterations of the creature (maybe even new versions of it? It's always a possibility) while Prometheus 2 will be focused on introducing new creatures to the franchise, after Prometheus was criticized for convoluted use of the original creature.
Sigourney Weaver has also expressed interest in appearing in Alien 5, and while she hasn't officially signed on, her close working relationship with Blomkamp (they worked together on Chappie) is an excellent sign that she could appear in the film. With Prometheus 2 and Alien 5, the Alien franchise is looking like it's headed for a comeback.
