A Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover movie seemed like an impossibility a few years ago. Marvel Studios was trying- and failing- to secure the rights to lost properties like X-Men and The Fantastic Four, so the idea that the studios would put aside their differences and cooperate in a single film was completely insane.
Today? Less insane. It's been done already, now that Spider-Man will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in earnest, two years from now. That in itself is a crossover movie- but could there be two more on the way?
According to Hugh Jackman, it's a very real possibility. The actor, while discussing the addition of Spider-Man into the Marvel movie canon, was asked if he thought it was possible for Wolverine to do the same. And the actor was suprisingly optimistic, saying "Two years ago I'd have said you'd be a real optimist to think it's ever happen. But weirdly now, I just think it maybe could. I think there is the possibility that it will happen."
Jackman has long been an outspoken fan of all superhero movies, especially the possibility of his Wolverine character venturing into other franchises (he once tried to get a cameo in the original Spider-Man film, and nearly succeeded- except that he couldn't find his classic Wolverine costume). But he might not be the only character potentially joining the Marvel Universe in a crossover film.
Another possibility is Deadpool, who may or may not be part of the official X-Men universe and who will be getting a spin-off solo film next year. Deadpool, as a constantly sarcastic character, would be a perfect addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, who has characters like Tony Stark that crack plenty of jokes, but not ones that routinely break the fourth wall like Deadpool does.
Other films remain a possibility- say, a crossover with Fantastic Four or Batman v Superman- but of the many options, Wolverine and Deadpool are the likeliest.
