Wolfenstein: The Old Blood physical release on PS4, PC platforms is officially dated by Bethesda Softworks May 15 while the digital edition rolls out May 6 from game developer MachineGames.

This is an all-new standalone entry to the well received, first person shooter game franchise has been announced via Twitter ahead of their planned appearance at E3 later this year. The PS4 digital edition arrives one week earlier than the retail copies and will be available for download in first week of May.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood serves as a prequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order that recorded a successful re-release of the series Mid last year.

"Diving back into the world of Wolfenstein has really been fun for us," said Jerk Gustafsson, executive producer at MachineGames. "We've enjoyed exploring the events leading up to The New Order. We think fans will really enjoy the story, all the action and, of course, jumping back into the combat with new weapons."

The game is set in the year 1946 with the Nazi's winning the second world war and spans a two- part prequel that will see players take on the role of BJ Blazkowicz as he breaks into the iconic Castle Wolfenstein and explores the city of Wulfburg.

Here's an excerpt of the press release for Wolfenstein: The Old Blood from publisher Bethesda Softworks:

"The year is 1946 and the Nazis are on the brink of winning World War II. In an effort to turn the tide in the Allies' favor, B.J. Blazkowicz must embark on an epic, two-part mission deep within Bavaria. Part one of Wolfenstein:

The Old Blood - Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves - pits B.J. Blazkowicz against a maniacal prison warden as he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead's compound.

In part two - The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs - our hero's search for the coordinates leads him to the city of Wulfburg where an obsessed Nazi archaeologist is exhuming mysterious artifacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power.

Wolfenstein: The New Order, released in May 2014, enjoyed worldwide critical and commercial success with over 75 Game of the Year awards, and was hailed by The New York Times as "one of the very best releases of the year."

The physical copies for the Xbox One wasn't part of the announced release date for Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and when asked by a fan, Bethesda made it clear that at this time, it is coming to PS4 and PC.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a prequel to The New Order launching May 6 on digital release and May 15 for physical copies available on PS4 and PC for a discounted price of $19.99.
