Casting Spider-Man is one of the biggest moves Marvel will make for a very long time. Not only is Spider-Man one of the flagship heroes of the Marvel Universe (if not the most recognizable Marvel hero of all time), but he'll be appearing in both Marvel's films and Sony's at the same time- the actor playing Spider-Man is going to be supremely busy for the next several years, making superhero flick after superhero flick. They'd better pick the right guy.
And maybe they have. The latest rumor surrounding Spider-Man is that Asa Butterfield has potentially been cast in the role. According to ComicBook.com, known for the films Hugo and Ender's Game, may be part of a list of actors that Marvel is considering for the all-important superhero role. As well, when asked about the possibility of becoming Spider-Man in a recent Reddit AMA, Butterfield replied: "I'M SO DOWN!" Seems pretty enthusiastic about it, doesn't he?
However, the Spider-Man casting process has reportedly been shrouded in insane levels of secrecy. At one point, it was rumored that Marvel was traveling to actors' homes to do auditions in total privacy, rather than risk even the slightest chance of someone spying Butterfield or another potential actor in the Marvel offices and catching wise.
And Butterfield isn't the only actor rumored for the Spider-Man part. Mateus Ward, an actor from the series Weeds, has also been a name circling the film. As well, there's Ansel Elgort from The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent Series, whose name has been in the mix as well. Any of them could potentially get the part, considering that Marvel is allegedly looking for extremely young actors to fill Peter Parker's shoes this time. A teenage actor is probably exactly what they're looking for.
Spider-Man will premiere in its rebooted form on July 28, 2017.
