'Robotech' movie moves to Sony: Is an expanded universe in the works?

By

That Robotech is being adapted into a feature film is not technically news (well, not new news, anyway). That announcement came nearly two months ago, when it was first revealed that the three classic anime series were being developed into a major Hollywood action film.

But Robotech being in development just got a new twist- instead of Warner Bros at the helm, it's just been revealed that Robotech has switched sides, and is now being developed by Sony.

How will that affect the film? Well, judging by how quickly the movie changed hands (again, less than two months), it's likely that the project won't change too drastically. And more importantly, we'll probably never find out (unless there's some special feature on some Blu-Ray far into the future about "The Robotech That Never Was").

A statement from Sony's Michael De Luca confirms the news, as reported by Nerdist:

"Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless."

And Robotech could very well be part of Hollywood's latest trend of creating expanded universes out of a single franchise. It was just reported that Transformers will be undergoing the same strategy- multiple Transformers films all released that tie into each other, a la The Avengers. If Transformers could do it, why couldn't another giant robot battling franchise? It's also possible that anime adaptations could finally become the next big thing in Hollywood- something Hollywood has tried and failed to do for years (remember the live-action Dragon Ball movie?).

There's no premiere date for the Robotech movie, but expect more news on the adaptation in the coming months.
