Marvel fans have been cheering for Vin Diesel to play Black Bolt for what seems like years (actually, it probably has been years). And they'll have to keep cheering, because unfortunately for us, Diesel and Marvel continue to play coy with what seems like the most obvious comic book casting choice in several years.
Recently, the Furious 7 and Guardians of the Galaxy star spoke about a potential role in the Inhumans movie... in the most roundabout way possible. In an interview based around Diesel's love of all things geeky, he was grilled with a number of fast-paced nerd knowledge questions. Stuff like:
"Star Wars or Star Trek?"
"Star Wars"
"What's your Dungeons and Dragons class of choice?"
"Witch Hunger, Half-drow"
"James Bond or Jason Bourne?"
"Xander Cage"
But eventually, the conversation turned to Marvel comics, and when it did, Diesel threw down a pretty blatant Inhumans tease. First, when asked if he liked Batman or Superman better, Diesel's only answer? "Marvel." So on the follow-up question, about his preference or Wolverine or Cyclops, Diesel dodged the question again, saying "Black Bolt, Black Bolt, Black Bolt, Black Bolt."
Diesel couldn't make it any more obvious than that- he'll be playing Black Bolt in the Inhumans movie (or at the very least, he's campaigning his but off to get the part.
In Marvel comics, Black Bolt (real name: Blackagar Boltagon) is the ruler of the Inhumans, a superpowered being with a voice so powerful that speaking aloud could flatten an entire city. Because of that, Black Bolt has trained himself never to speak, cough, sneeze, etc., because of the potential risks involved. Which means that, like with Groot, Vin Diesel wouldn't be doing much speaking in the part. At least he'll actually be onscreen, though- presuming that he does get cast.
Inhumans will premiere on July 12, 2019.
