Missile Command' and 'Tempest' might get reboots: What Atari plans to do with its classic titles

By

Atari will continue to tap into the nostalgia banks of its fans after expressing their interest in creating reboots for both "Missile Command" and "Tempest." The news comes after the company's recent release of "Asteroid: Outpost" on Steam Early Access. The game comes from indie developer Salty Games.

The title receives a dramatic makeover, shifting from a top-down shooter to looking more like a game ripped straight from this current gaming generation. Along with releasing the open world sandbox survival game, Atari issued a statement indicating that the recently launched game is far from being their only ode to gaming nostalgia, according to Gamespot.

"We are going to be teaming up with young and innovative studios to take a refreshing look at each game from our extensive portfolio. Asteroids is the first of a long series of re-births, and we are considering doing the same for our iconic games such as Warlords, Adventure, Tempest, Missile Command and many more," said Atari Chief Operating Officer Todd Shallbetter.

The plans to potentially reboot "Tempest" is drawing a great deal of attention after news leaked that Atari blocked the game's former developer, Jeff Minter, from launching his new shooter entitled "TxK," according to MCV UK.

Atari is said to be blocking the game, citing potential infringement upon the copyright of "Tempest." Minter also claims that Atari wants to have the game removed from the Playstation Store. Aside from "Asteroids," Atari has already begun its foray into the world of reboots with titles such as "Alone in the Dark: Illumination" and "RollerCoaster Tycoon World" getting the remake treatment, according to Eurogamer.

The "Alone in the Dark" reboot is in its beta stage while the second title is still currently in development. Atari has thus far not announced any definite approach to rebooting the old video game favorites.
