Right now, anything is possible with the Transformers franchise. It was recently announced that, instead of a tradition sequel, Paramount will be turning the franchise into an expanded universe, a la Marvel, DC Comics or any other of the many (many) other cinematic universe franchises being developed at this very moment. And that means that Transformers 5 might not be just a straight sequel. It could be a spin-off, prequel, crossover film or any other of a thousand options.
And MoviePilot has one suggestion for where the franchise might go, given its newfound creative freedom. They're saying that what might happen (and what the franchise desperately needs) is to ditch all its human characters and return to how the original Transformers cartoons were- all robots, all the time.
Along with this rumor, MoviePilot elaborates with a number of Transformers characters that could be included- and could benefit from no longer having Shia LaBeouf or Mark Wahlberg to follow them around and overcomplicate the story. Characters like:
- Unicron
- Galvatron
- The Dinobots
- The original Transformers on Cybertron
- The Maximals and Predacons
- The original Primes and Primus
Here's the question, though. If this was the case, and Transformers 5 was an all-Transformers film, would it even need to be live-action? The whole point of live-action, usually, is to have actual humans onscreen. But without humans, you could probably get away with making Transformers 5 a CGI animated film.
Of course, it's still possible that the fifth Transformers film would follow in the footsteps of the previous four, if only because the last four films have been so hugely profitable. They haven't exactly been critical darlings, but every film with the word "Transformers" in the title has made hundreds of millions (and sometimes billions) of dollars. That's not too shabby- and it might be the most important factor in deciding what Transformers 5 looks like.
