The G.I. Joe franchise is in need of a little TLC- but that's just what's the action-figures-to-movie film series is about to receive. It's just been reported that two major players have just joined on to the upcoming G.I. Joe 3: director D.J. Caruso and writer Aaron Berg. Caruso already has a number of major action films under his belt- Disturbia, I Am Number Four and Eagle Eye- and while none of those films were particularly huge successes, they guarantee that Caruso will bring a seasoned hand to the struggling G.I. Joe franchise.
By comparison, Aaron Berg is as unsullied as a filmmaker could be. He's got one major script under his belt; a script that hasn't actually been made into a film yet, but is churning up a fair amout of hype. The script, titled Section 6, is a spy thrilled that was the subject of a pretty lucrative bidding war until Universal ended up securing the rights to the film.
The combination of Caruso and Berg should be a pretty large positive for the G.I. Joe franchise. But there could be a HUGE positive coming to the series soon- perhaps, a crossover from a few Transformers? It's long been rumored that Paramount is thinking of melding their two toy-based blockbuster franchises into a single film, but now that may become a reality with the latest G.I. Joe movie. Especially considering that Screen Rant reports that the newest G.I. Joe film will "revamp the action franchise." And also that Berg and Caruso will likely be throwing out everything that's currently been done on G.I. Joe 3 and starting from scratch.
What do you think? Would you prefer a G.I. Joe 3 that's Joes-only, or would you be more interested if you knew Optimus Prime was going to make an appearance?
