New 'World of Warcraft' tokens plummet in value one day after making their debut

By

After making their debut just a day earlier, the new "World of Warcraft" tokens are now worth way less.

The tokens are in-game items being sold at $20 a pop, and they can be used to trade for things such as gold and game time. The interesting thing about these tokens is that their value is dependent on what the market dictates for them.

The plan for the tokens involves Blizzard first setting a baseline value for them, and from that point, it would then be the actions of the players which would directly affect how much they would be worth, according to PC Gamer.

It's unknown whether Blizzard thought the value of the tokens would drop by 25 percent in a single day.

To be more precise, the exact value of a single "World of Warcraft" token was set at 30,000 gold by Blizzard, but since then, it has dropped to right around 22,000 level, give or take a few hundred.

It's not entirely clear why the tokens were devalued so quickly, but in all likelihood, the reason involves some entirely legal actions done with the game's Auction House, according to PC Games N.

The exact chain of events may have involved a bunch of players buying the tokens as soon as they were released and then using them to nab some easy gold via the Auction House. If this is indeed what happened, then the sheer number of tokens currently available inside the game could only work to significant dampen its value.

More tokens could be on the market soon, and if they drop the price even further, Blizzard may have to call an audible and start taking action.

As for other "World of Warcraft" related news, the game is currently blocked in Crimea along with some other well-known Blizzard titles, according to Engadget.

Blizzard joins Apple and Google on the list of other companies who have suspended their services to the region.

The action was taken because of the sanctions the United States leveled against Crimea.
