More and more Nexus 5 users are said to have started receiving the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop update, which includes bug fixes, features such as Device Protection. It is also expected that owners of other Nexus devices are up next to receive the update. However, two things are still being confirmed by other Nexus owners: time frame of the update, and the type of Android Lollipop update they will be receiving.
The Android 5.1 Lollipop was reported to have been available only to select users when Google announced it in March. However, the update is now picking up its pace, and is expected that owners of Nexus 4, 7, and 9 devices are up next to get the update.
The update gives performance improvements and fixes on bugs found in the previous Android Lollipop version. The current update bears the build LMY471. This was said to be different from the one received by the select Nexus 5 users in March. Compared to the previous build, this brought added SIM card improvements to the device.
Besides the Nexus 5, Google has reportedly confirmed that Nexus 6, 7 2012 Wi-Fi, 7 2013, and Nexus 10 will also receive the latest Android Lollipop. However, the company did not mention a specific time frame yet as to when will other Nexus devices receive the update. Further, it was noted that it is still unclear if the Nexus devices will receive an Android 5.1 or Android 5.1.1 update. The latter is said to include a bug fix for the memory leak problem.
Android 5.1 Lollipop update brings the following fixes and improvements:
- improvements in battery life for devices running the new operating system
- and increased protection and security afforded by a new locking system that prevents the device from being used when lost or stolen even, if it is given a factory reset. The device will still not work unless the original user signs in with his or her Google account credentials.
- the ability to place high definition voice calls between devices that are running the new OS.
- SIM card improvements
