Girl With Dragon Tattoo Sequel moves ahead without David Fincher; Will Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara reprise their roles?

By

The man behind The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie adaptation might not be working on a much-awaited sequel if recent reports are to be believed. David Fincher who guided the movie to great box office success announced several months ago that he intended to make the sequel. After that though, not much have been heard from Fincher and the project. That is until recently when Sony announced that it would go ahead with the development of the sequel without Fincher at the helm.

Two For One

The decision to film The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo sequel without David Fincher was reached after the release of the fourth book in the series penned by Stieg Larsson. The fourth book entitled "The Girl in the Spider's Web" could also be made into a movie if a sequel is indeed to be made.

Sony's plan though is not to make the sequel cover the second and third books in the series. This is far from what others have been doing of splitting a book into two movies to maximize profit. By combining "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" in one movie, the studio could appeal to those viewers who are not fans of what other studios have been doing. This would also set up a trilogy for the series of books as the third installment could be based on the Spider's Web installment.

Casting Questions

In light of this bit of news, there is no word yet whether Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are still part of the project. Mara is almost certainly to be retained but Craig's status as far as casting is concerned is still up in the air. It was after all rumored that Sony is looking to not cast Craig to save money.

The absence of David Fincher could be a big disappointment for the fans of the movie adaptation. Whether the majority of them will support the sequel or not remains to be seen.
