Wi-Fi Nexus 7 2013 devices failing in different ways? Android 5.1 factory image might fix them

More and more owners are complaining that their Wi-Fi Nexus 7 2013 are failing in different ways after a Lollipop update. A hardware issue was suspected of causing the problem. One device owner posted in Twitter, "No more google tablets if not fixed." Besides refraining from rebooting the device, it is hoped that the Android 5.1 could fix these issues. Google Developers site posted flashing instructions of the Android 5.1 factory image for Nexus 7 2013 (Wi-Fi and LTE versions).

The issues included apps crashing, slow responses, and lagging performances. Usually, users would then resort to device reboot. However, instead of a refreshed system, it created another issue: the tablet cannot boot past the Google splash screen that pops up on the device. Others reported that the tablet would boot up but freezes shortly.

Though some of the Wi-Fi Nexus 7 2013 devices have warranties, it is said not to be the case with other device owners. Most of the devices are now without warranties, and consumers who were directed to ASUS support are reportedly finding that the company is charging them for repairs, with some as high as $344 for just a single repair process. Android Headlines noted Android Police that the types of problems are connected with hardware issues. It was also said that these have been happening before the Lollipop updates.

"If you have a Nexus 7 2013 tablet that is experiencing these problems, it's unfortunate, but you should be prepared for a hefty repair bill from ASUS should you decide to send it in," said Android Headlines.

9to5Google posted a long list of complaints from various Nexus 7 2013 owners. One user said:

"In August 2013 I purchased a Nexus 7 tablet from BestBuy (I also purchased the extended warranty) the tablet had been performing flawlessly up until a few weeks ago when one morning the tablet would not boot past the Google screen. This appears to have happened after the last system update (Lollipop) released by Google."

"From what I have read on the Internet, I am not the only one that has this issue. Since the tablet won't boot past the Google screen and it has never been rooted (the bootloader is locked) I can not enter recovery mode or perform a factory reset. Phone calls to Google and the tablet manufacturer ASUS have not helped."

"ASUS would attempt to fix the tablet at my expense for $200 (it is out of warranty) and Google won't help because I did not purchase the tablet from the Play Store. I now am left with a $300 useless brick with a cracked screen (the Google representative asked me to open the tablet to find the serial number). It is my estimation that this is not a hardware issue but rather a software issue created by the last release of Lollipop. I simply would like someone to take ownership of this issue and replace my Nexus 7 2013 tablet."

Owners of bricked Nexus 7 2013 also aired their problems in Twitter:

One Twitter user said, "No more google tablets if not fixed."

Other reports said that the Android 5.1 update could fix these issues. Hence, users can check the Google Developers site, as recent reports said that the LTE version of the Nexus 7 2013 started receiving the Lollipop update. The factory image is hoped to solve the problems found in bricked Nexus 7 2013 devices. In the site there are flashing instructions for Nexus devices. Owners should save important data since flashing a new system image will delete them.
