After being released on April 14, Mortal Kombat X lost most of the negative comments and criticisms gained before its launch date, however, new issues took its place. One of which was that some of the characters, despite being present in the game as opponents, were not player-usable. This sparked some outrage, though, a reddit user and tweaker found a way to change everything. In the user's Mortal Kombat X game guide, he details how he was able to do so.
Some of the unplayable characters include Rain, Baraka, and Sindel, the trick, however, can be used on any unplayable character in the game. In essence, the tweak only involves renaming a few folders and can only be applied on the PC platform. Moreover, what it does is that it masks an unusable character with a usable one in order to trick the system.
In order to do this, locate the game's source files specifically, for a playable and intended unplayable character. Back up the files of the two to restore the game in its original condition afterwards. Files of an unplayable character should be renamed the same with the files of a playable one. Then, move the newly renamed files of the unplayable character to the folder of the playable character's folder, consequently overwriting them.
For example, Rain's files should be renamed to the files of Shinook. Afterward, move them to Shinook's content folder that will replace the original Shinook contents. When starting the game, the area where Shinook should be will be replaced by Rain. The same process applies for other unplayable characters.
Recently, it was announced that the game intended to make Rain a playable character through a purchasable DLC in the future. However, this will no longer be feasible considering the expense-free way to unlock characters through the reddit user's Mortal Kombat X game guide. Moreover, this is not a bug that the developers can fix.
