The ‘Kylie Jenner Challenge’ Poses Risks of Long Term Lip Damage: Here’s A Safer Way to Achieve Plump, Full Lips

By

In case you did not know, the "Kylie Jenner Challenge" is a trend nowadays with teens posting photos of their plump lips after sucking on a shot glass or bottle until their blood vessels burst. While the act may look pretty harmless for some, doctors warn teenagers that doing so may actually lead to long-term damage.

If you try to search for the hashtag #KylieJennerChallenge on Twitter, you will be flooded with quite a lot of photos of teenagers with their lips on full display. The trend started after a number of teenagers attempted to recreate Kylie Jenner's infamous lips.

The act of sucking on a shot glass or a bottle until the blood vessels of the lips burst has caught the attention of medical professionals, who warned teenagers of the long term effects of participating in the challenge.

According to Fox59, Dr. Beth Brogan, a dermatologist at the St. Vincent Medical Group said that there could be permanent bruising, scarring and swelling of the lips once the blood vessels of the lips burst. The deed also poses the teens at risk for cutting their lips if there is a defect in the glass.

Dr. Dendy Engelman, a director of the Dermatologic Surgery at the New York Medical College explained to Fusion the science of what happens when you take on the challenge. Dr. Engelman explained that sucking for 15-30 seconds is fine, but 60 seconds or more could potentially lead to long-term damage.

There is, however, a safer way to achieve Kylie Jenner's full, plump lips. According to Allure magazine, an equal mixture of coconut oil, cinnamon and cayenne pepper applied on the lips and tapped with a warm piece of cloth can give you natural, plump lips, which could last for hours. It is natural and does not pose any health risks, plus it gives off a rosy tint.

"The spices actually gave my lips a really pretty rosy tint, and the coconut oil made them softer," Heather Wilson, a wellness consultant, told the outlet. Wilson warned that those who have low tolerance for spices should avoid licking their lips when the mixture is applied.
